Sports In Cincinnati

If there's one thing all American cities have in common it's that every one of them has some kind of basis in sport. Whether it be the Friday night high school football games in Texas or the bashed-up sedans pasted with advertising decals for everything from polymer cement to Accpac Vancouver software racing around the circular tracks of the Midwest, every city has something to offer. If you're the sort of person who likes to watch or play sports, this guide to sports in Cincinnati should give you an idea of whether your particular preferences are represented here.

Major League Baseball

Professional baseball in Cincinnati dates back to 1869. In those days, there were no global internet access points or rich celebrities to patronize teams, so Cincinnati's first team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was formed in a law office. Though the team had been playing for years, the meeting made the team a professional one, the first regular professional team in the United States. The team had only ten players and only lasted three years before it was disbanded, but would provide the inspiration for later teams like the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox.

Cincinnati's current baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds, was formed in 1882 and currently plays in the National League. Their original home was the Bank Street Grounds and since then they have had six homes, including the Riverfront Stadium, which was built in 1970. However, not even the bankruptcy attorneys southern California has so many of could have saved the old stadium from demolition and now the Reds' new home is the Great American Ballpark, located next door to the old stadium and opened in 2003. The Reds have won five World Series titles, the most recent in 1990.

Major League Football

Cincinnati's representation in the National Football League is the Cincinnati Bengals. They played their first season in 1968 as part of the American Football League but joined the NFL when the two leagues merged, much like the assimilation of disparate work in online project collaboration. The Bengals' home is Paul Brown Stadium and they currently have never won a Super Bowl title, though they have made the playoffs several times. Team colors are orange, black and white and their uniforms sport the emblem of a Bengal tiger.

Minor Leagues, College Teams, and Other Sports

Some of these teams are: the Kings, who play soccer, the Cyclones, who play hockey, the Excite, who play indoor soccer, and the Dockers, who play Australian football. There are also three colleges with teams in the NCAA Division I, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, Xavier University Musketeers, and the Miami University Red Hawks. The Western and Southern Financial Group Masters and Women's Open of Tennis is hosted in Cincinnati, as is the annual Flying Pig Marathon.
