If there's one thing all American cities have in common it's that
every one of them has some kind of basis in sport. Whether it be the Friday
night high school football games in Texas or the bashed-up sedans pasted with
advertising decals for everything from polymer cement to Accpac Vancouver
software racing around the circular tracks of the Midwest, every city has something
to offer. If you're the sort of person who likes to watch or play sports,
this guide to sports in Cincinnati should give you an idea of whether your particular
preferences are represented here.
Major League Baseball
Professional baseball in Cincinnati dates back to 1869. In those days, there
were no global internet access points or rich celebrities to patronize teams,
so Cincinnati's first team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was formed in
a law office. Though the team had been playing for years, the meeting made the
team a professional one, the first regular professional team in the United States.
The team had only ten players and only lasted three years before it was disbanded,
but would provide the inspiration for later teams like the Cincinnati Reds and
the Boston Red Sox.
Cincinnati's current baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds, was formed in
1882 and currently plays in the National League. Their original home was the
Bank Street Grounds and since then they have had six homes, including the Riverfront
Stadium, which was built in 1970. However, not even the bankruptcy attorneys
southern California has so many of could have saved the old stadium from demolition
and now the Reds' new home is the Great American Ballpark, located next
door to the old stadium and opened in 2003. The Reds have won five World Series
titles, the most recent in 1990.
Major League Football
Cincinnati's representation in the National Football League is the Cincinnati
Bengals. They played their first season in 1968 as part of the American Football
League but joined the NFL when the two leagues merged, much like the assimilation
of disparate work in online project collaboration. The Bengals' home
is Paul Brown Stadium and they currently have never won a Super Bowl title,
though they have made the playoffs several times. Team colors are orange, black
and white and their uniforms sport the emblem of a Bengal tiger.
Minor Leagues, College Teams, and Other Sports
There are ten minor league professional sports teams in Cincinnati, some supported
by advertising for realtor web design like in NASCAR and others subsisting
on ticket sales. Some of these teams are: the Kings, who play soccer, the Cyclones,
who play hockey, the Excite, who play indoor soccer, and the Dockers, who play
Australian football. There are also three colleges with teams in the NCAA Division
I, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, Xavier University Musketeers, and
the Miami University Red Hawks. The Western and Southern Financial Group Masters
and Women's Open of Tennis is hosted in Cincinnati, as is the annual Flying
